An open letter to the Catholic Leader from Terry Fitzpatrick

Web Team » 24 March 2009 » In Crossroads »

Since it is unlikely that this letter will be posted on the Catholic Leader, we have posted it here.

Many people have written to the Catholic Leader over past six months to express an alternate opinion to the ones expressed in your paper regarding the parish of St Mary’s South Brisbane. But their views have not been honored or recognized in any way. We are only hearing from only one perspective. If this was a truly Catholic newspaper, as it proposes to be, then it would embrace diversity as the word Catholic implies. Instead what is being expressed at the moment is one sided and incomplete. But what can one expect from a church which has become increasingly fearful of change. The great Latin phrase that was coined during the Reformation era (ca. 1500-1650) “Ecclesia reformandum, semper reformanda”, translated, the reformed church is always reforming, is worth remembering. This phrase and all it invites us into seems to have been forgotten, or conveniently buried. The church appears to be content to die a peaceful death embracing stale outmoded paradigms no longer relevant or meaningful to most people.

Sincerely,

Fr. Terry Fitzpatrick

St Mary’s South Brisbane.
