Where are all those hundreds of people who are meant to flock to St Mary’s for their liturgies each weekend? Looks about forty to me at this one – max. The extinction of this madness might be closer than any of us even dared to hope,
No community ever satisfies everyone’s needs or makes everybody in congregation 100% happy but people generally accept what happens in their churches for the sake of ‘community’ whether liberal or orthodox – people tend to ‘go with the flow’ – there are people currently at SMX not happy with recent changes to liturgy, particularly the changes to Eucharistic prayers, but they accept these changes and remain part of their community. There are those at the old church who may find it unusual all the sudden changes to liturgy in the last year, but accept those changes too. The community at the old church I have found in some ways even more diverse than St Mary’s in the Kennedy era – among the musicians alone there are 10 different nationalities. This presents challenges not to remain in your own ‘comfort zone’ but listen to people and try to understand their different backgrounds and beliefs. There’s no ‘one size fits all’ for either community, and never will be.
The liturgy is important, but only as a vehicle for expressing beliefs. Detach the beliefs from the liturgy and it becomes meaningless. Thus we see the video scenes here becoming more and more a sad parody of the catholic mass. Think, for example, of Peter Kennedy reading from the gospels – then kissing the bible!
Thank you Tim. If that is correct, then I will concede that Father Kennedy is showing signs of integrity regarding his actions. But why are they all still so concerned about the state of an institution that they have voluntarily left? And it can’t be long before they dispense altogether with the need for a priest at their ‘Eucharists’ can it? From what I can glean about their beliefs this would seem a perfectly logical development to me.

I don’t think they are claiming to ‘parody’ the Catholic mass. Kennedy states they have now formed a community separate from the Catholic church.
