The Intelligence² Debate – Stephen Fry (Unedited)

This video is of the 2009 Intelligence Squared debate with  Stephen Fry putting forward his perspective on the Catholic Church within  current day contexts. He is a challenging and at time very confronting speaker!

A powerful plea for reform, and I whole heartedly agree such a large and powerful instution needs monitoring and reform. However, the context is a debate, and as such it’s remiss not to be viewed in that form http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kuzYwzGoXw&feature=related

While I await for that reform that has, is, or is yet to happen, what of my little parish church, an historical and beautiful part of my city, important for music, heritage… I could walk away from my church tomorrow happy with the contribution I’ve made to one important aspect of my city’s history over the last year – my 9am choir this morning was – well, fantastic – and without it’s 2 regular professional musicians.

And I’ll cop my criticism. I have people coming in and telling me how to arrange, how to write, how to organise the music – I take it on board – I give a person a task they are comfortable with and let those go graciously who have other commitments… or welcome them back, mend bridges I’ve strained in the past, and concede that ego plays a large role in music making and there will always be arguments around the arts.

My niche ultimately is to write, and for this reason I visit this website to see where part the debate is at. St Mary’s / SMX is interesting – this whole debate is good for the church. It must reform.
