A few weeks ago I gave a homily from the book What the Bleep do We Know?(What tнē #$*! D̄ө ωΣ (k)πow!?)
I’m sure many of you saw the movie and possibly have read the book. I’m reading it again because I now recognise that there are parallels between quantum physics and the teachings of the mystics that are just too amazing to ignore.
Faith and Art; Living with Tough Convictions in an Easy World
Hi I’m Peter Breen great to be here. I am married to Mavis – for 37 years with 4 children, 4 in law children and 6.5 grandchildren and a dog named Pilgrim. I work part time as a radiographer at RBWH and am Cofounder, Chair and Administrator of Jugglers Art Space in the Valley – a social enterprise with a social justice, arts and spirituality focus.
I must first of all congratulate Terry on the skill with which he ran the meeting today. His forbearance in allowing anyone to have their say was as necessary as it was commendable. The meeting had the laudable result of allowing members of the community to send messages to the Board as well as gathering ideas on where we should go from here.
If one searches the gospels for common phrases the one which appears most often is NOT “love your enemy” or “love your neighbour as yourself”, even though they are very much part of the Christian message. The most frequent command, order, suggestion in a great variety of situations: angelic visitations, rough weather, empty stomachs, sick children, death and strange apparitions is ….
WAIT FOR IT
“Don’t be afraid”
and its literary variations: “fear not; be not afraid; let not your hearts be troubled, be of good cheer” etc.
I want to make four or five points about this week’s Gospel reading – an exceptionally powerful and confronting one, or at least it is to me. These points are simply reflections, and some of them come up with questions that I don’t know the answer to.
Last time I was actually invited to read the gospel in a catholic mass was actually in Rome – I was at an Ecumenical institute run by a rather radical group of Dutch nuns.
On our main highways these days we are invited to take some time out and refresh ourselves with a “cup of Tea” before continuing on our journey. The point of that of course is to make sure we get to our journey’s end safely.
A reading from the holy gospel according to Matthew 5:13—16
Jesus said to the disciples: ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if salt becomes tasteless, what can make it salty again? It is good for nothing, and can only be thrown out to be trampled underfoot.’ ‘You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill-top cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp to put it under the tub; they put it on the lamp-stand where it shines for everyone in the house. In the same way your light must shine in the sight of all, so that, seeing your good works, they may give praise to God in heaven.’
This is the gospel, the Good News.
This reading is one we need to breathe in, to take it deep within, to feel the power and truth.
Then to become it – to be that light to others, and salt for the earth.
One story from the numerous we heard during the floods, captures the essence of this gospel.
