What a fascinating thing is prayer! How comforting yet challenging at times. It can be private or communal. I think it is the one action which sets us apart from the rest of visible creation. I have never noticed our family pets gathering for prayer, although the birds sometimes sing like a choir. Those precious creatures reflect the beauty and wonder of creation in their own unreflective yet special way. But the deliberate act of praying, of acknowledging some power/ force/being beyond ourselves presupposes a belief in mystery; and we humans can be so uncomfortably wary of the unknown and the unknowable.
