One of our supporters in Townsville would like to meet with like-minded people to discuss matters of interest. Would you like to be part of this group? Those of us who belong to clusters in Brisbane can give the idea a tick. We find the opportunity to get together for discussions, meditation, liturgy or just for socializing, really works very well. If you are interested contact Lori lathompson19@bigpond.com. Other non-Brisbane supporters might like to consider the possibility of setting up clusters as well. For more information email marg margdoc2@gmail.com

For almost a year now, I have been riding with a group of cyclists in Maleny who call themselves ”The Lycra Lizards”. I suppose the “lycra”makes it clear we’re not the leather-clad variety – but why ever did they choose “lizards”?

Over the past few months, an enthusiasm has grown and spread within the group to take on a special challenge. Six of us have decided to join an organised group of about 30 cyclists who will ride the length of Italy, from Palermo in Sicily to Lake Como in the north – a total of 3000km in 35 days. It’s camping all the way, but comes with two support vehicles – one to go ahead of us, setting up camp and cooking our meals (pasta again?), and one to pick up any stragglers. We will ride up the west coast through Pompeii and Rome (with rest days in each), then through Tuscany via Siena and Florence (with a restday there). We will climb about 1700 metres to cycle across the Apennines to Venice for another well-earned day out of the saddle, and then ascend another 3000 metres to cross over the Dolomites to Como. I have decided to call it quits there (and have quite a few “collapse” days), but my five Maleny friends (sorry, Lizards) will add on another 12 days (and 1200 more kilometres), taking on the French Alps to coast on down to Nice. There is another huge upside to this ride. It has a sponsored charity called Oncology Children’s Foundation http://www.ocf.com.au/

OCF is an Australian charity dedicated to finding cures for childhood cancers with the lowest survival rates, such as neuroblastoma and brain tumors. They are achieving incredible breakthroughs. The OCF funded Drug Development Project program has identified new targets in cancer cells and developed an entirely new class of drugs that kill neuroblastoma cells, and the same drugs have a profound impact on melanoma. These findings have the potential to change the way we treat all cancers and are on the verge of commencing clinical trials. So the six of us, LYCRA LIZARDS from Maleny will be putting ourselves to the test in riding 4200km (or 3000km for me) in aid of this very worthy and well organised charity – and by the way all the cyclists are paying their own way there, paying for the ride and all associated costs. So, if you feel you can help with a donation, we will be really grateful.

ALL FUNDS RAISED OR SPONSORSHIPS GO DIRECT TO THE ONCOLOGY CHILDREN’S FOUNDATION

Donations can be made by direct donation to: http://www.everydayhero.com.au/maleny_lycra_lizards. All donations will be receipted (all over $2 are tax deductible) So please help if you can and do have a look at their website http://www.ocf.com.au/ to see the great work they are doing.

Best wishes, and thanks for reading to the end,

Paul Russell
